When Ferial arrived in the UK from Sri Lanka in 2024, she left behind everything she had ever known—her home, family, friends, and the life she had built. Seeking safety and the opportunity to rebuild her future, she began a new chapter filled with both hope and uncertainty.
The asylum process took around 18 months before Ferial received her leave to remain. While this was a significant milestone, it was only the beginning of a new journey. Like many newly recognised refugees, she faced the challenge of adapting to a new country, improving her English, understanding unfamiliar systems, finding employment, and becoming independent.
Just one or two weeks after arriving in England, Ferial began volunteering with Friends of the Drop-In for Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Sunderland (FODI). What started as a way to stay active and connect with others soon became a life-changing experience.
Through volunteering, Ferial received practical advice, guidance, and ongoing support. She developed her communication skills, built confidence, and gained valuable work experience while becoming part of a welcoming community. She also completed the Level One Food and Hygiene Course with FODI’s budget.
That experience proved to be a turning point. Today, Ferial is happily employed in a café, a role she believes she may not have secured without the skills and experience she gained through volunteering at FODI.
“Volunteering at FODI gave me valuable experience. That experience helped me to get my current job in a café. FODI played a very important role in helping me move forward and become more independent.”
Looking ahead, Ferial hopes to continue developing her skills, build a stable and happy life for herself and her family, and one day support others who are facing similar challenges.
Her family is grateful for the opportunity to build a new life in England. Although settling into a new country has not been easy, they value the safety, stability, and opportunities they have found.
Ferial has an encouraging message for other refugees and asylum seekers who may be feeling hopeless:
“Please don’t give up. I know the journey can be very difficult, and sometimes you may feel that there is no hope. But things can change. Keep going, ask for help when you need it, learn new skills and believe in yourself. Your past does not have to decide your future. There is always a possibility to rebuild your life.”
